Installing and Setting Up Sparrow
Sparrow is available for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
The website provides detailed instructions, but here are the key steps:
1. Download and install Sparrow
2. On first run, Sparrow will prompt you to create a new wallet or import an existing one
3. To create a new wallet, you’ll set a wallet name and be shown a 24-word recovery seed phrase to back up
4. Secure this seed phrase – anyone with access to it can access your Bitcoin!
5. Set a wallet password and optional hardware wallet integration
6. Your Sparrow wallet is now set up to receive, send and manage Bitcoin
Receiving Bitcoin
To receive Bitcoin to your new Sparrow wallet, simply click the “Receive” tab and select “Create New Address.”
Sparrow will generate a new Bitcoin address for you that you can share to receive payments.
You can add a label to easily identify addresses.
Sending Bitcoin
To send Bitcoin, go to the “Send” tab and enter the recipient’s address and amount to transfer.
You can review details like transaction fees before finalizing. Sparrow allows specifying a target or fixed fee rate for your transaction.
Connecting a Hardware Wallet
To use a Cold Card, Block Stream, Foundation Passport, or Keystone hardware wallet with Sparrow for increased security, go to the “Server” menu and select “Connect Hardware Wallet.”
You’ll need to allow the hardware wallet to integrate with Sparrow. Once connected, any Bitcoin transactions will require confirmation and signing on your hardware device.
Your private keys will remain secure on the hardware wallet, while you can enjoy Sparrow’s desktop interface.
Advanced UTXO Management
For more advanced users, Sparrow provides robust Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) management through the coin control feature.
This allows you to select specific UTXOs to include or exclude in transactions, useful for optimizing privacy or managing accumulated UTXO sets over time.
The Bitcoin Sparrow wallet balances strong security with an intuitive and user-friendly interface, making it an excellent option for both new and experienced Bitcoin users.
By giving you full control of your private keys while supporting hardware wallets and advanced features, Sparrow provides a rich yet streamlined way to self-custody your Bitcoin.
